One of the most common and well-known therapeutic procedures performed by chiropractors is spine manipulation, and it is sometimes called “spine adjustment”. The purpose of this treatment is to restore joint mobility by applying controlled force to a complete spinal column that has become restricted in its movement as a result of tissue injury.
Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event (usually a herniated disc), such as the improper lifting of heavy loads, or through repetitive stresses (microtrauma), as well as sitting in an uncomfortable position of the spine for a long period. In any case, injured tissues are subject to physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, pinched nerves, and reduced function. Manipulation or adjustment of the joint and tissue restores mobility, which relieves pain, muscle tension, and pressure on the nerve, allowing the tissue to heal.
Spinal manipulation is very safe when performed by a trained chiropractor. The final results are visible immediately or no later than 12 to 48 hours after treatment.
